Lost

Cain

Cain…Cain, I love you. Can you hear me? I’m trying to get back to you. I love you, Cain.

Heat clung to me as I fell to my knees. Liana’s voice pounded through my skull, loud and clear and alive.

She was alive.

She was alive. My vision cleared as I blinked and I watched a teardrop hit the ground in front of me, evaporating as soon as it touched the hot dirt.

I sat on my heels and a scream tore through me, my bones echoing with the noise. I had to get to her. I had to.

I was in the deepest point of hell where the only light came from the hot red lava that burbled beneath the cracks on the surface. There were large pits filled with demons— demons that were almost as ancient as the gods. They shrank back as I passed them, recognizing my power. I heard their chatter in the demonic languages that I now understood.

They whispered about their new lord. Their new master. They had feared Nergal but now he was dead. I wasn’t feared quite yet— only respected for the power I wielded.

Did I want them to fear me? I didn’t know. I knew Liana would say she didn’t want anyone to actually fear her but fear had its place…I was beginning to understand my father more and more every moment that passed.

I didn’t want to become him. I had Liana to ground me when I felt the wave of darkness flow through me, threatening to deafen me to any sort of cries for mercy. Like the warriors of Inanna— the council of men that I knew were fierce. I knew they were dangerous and respected and feared.

I had made them beg for their lives.

That could bite me in that ass one day that I had let four of them live.

Before sadness could needle its way into my heart, I stood and took everything in again. She felt so close and so far.

Elle had told me that I would have to find the deepest pit and go into it. She had told me there was a box— known as the box of realms— that would let me pass to Liana.

If I weren’t part demon or the son of Nergal, I would be dead right now. Sweat dripped from my body, the metal of my armor insulating me. I was undoubtedly dehydrated at this point but would worry about that later when I had time.

Liana was the only purpose I had. Now that her voice had seared my soul, my unyielding resolve had been restored. I would find her and we would face the rest of the world together.

My wings spread behind me, stretching like arms after a long nap. They lifted me above the pits that sprinkled the cave floor.

This place truly was hell. Known as the Prisons of Kur, a place reserved for the most ancient demons and tortured souls— I felt like all of my sins had finally caught up to me now that I stood here.
